Want to Add More Greens to Your Life?…Invest in a Blender

We just bought the VitaMix Blender… “the bomb” of blenders. It wasn’t cheap…not even close, but it’s already worth it after just a few days. We have had our share of other smoothie makers, juicers, and blenders and have had to throw them out after burning out the rubber, breaking a blade, or after one of the kids stuck a fork in it to see if it would “blend”. I have always wanted a heavy duty blender but frankly I just wouldn’t spend the money. Recently though my husband and I have decided to really put our money where our mouth is and start moving to a more raw food diet. We aren’t going fanatic on anyone, don’t worry. But we are trying to make some serious progress in becoming a more healthy family. The Vita Mix blender is one way to help with that process. So today I am asking others to share their opinions about blending and juicing and what kind of equipment they are using…whether it’s an inexpensive brand or you have to take out a second mortgage to pay for it. Don’t Fall for “Long, Lean Muscle Myth”

Okay, I will admit it, I have recently fallen prey to wishful thinking. It can easily happen in the fitness world, though, so I can’t feel too bad about it. Has anyone else fallen prey to the idea that a certain exercise will give us “long lean muscles”? It’s a concept that we hear often lately (in group exercise classes, etc.), but is it a valid concept? Given what we know about our muscles (we all have short and long ones) the idea that our muscles will become “longer” or even “leaner” doesn’t hold any real weight…so don’t be fooled!

Most women tell me they would like to have more tone to their muscles, but not more bulk. Body builders aside, many women lift weights or do weight bearing exercise using their own body weight so that they can have a leaner look, not a bigger or more bulky one. Yet the idea that exercise alone can achieve this look, is not really accurate. Actually it is a combination of diet and exercise together that can give someone that lean look. So when we hear fitness instructors tell us that if we do this or that type of exercise we will have long lean muscles, we can enlighten them by explaining that we are not ever going to lengthen a muscle. I came across a great article that clearly explains why is is true. It is a must read if you want to understand not only how muscles play a role in how we look, but also how body type is important as well! E article can be found at Treeoffitness.com.

MIT’s Help to Keep me From Spinning my Wheels

I have not had a lot of energy lately and I have gotten stuck spinning my wheels. A bug (flu-like) hit our house and some recent health news about a family member have kept me from a goal oriented attitude daily. But spinning my wheels is not getting me anywhere! I need to rethink my daily tasks to get me back on track. One way to do this is to think about my MIT’s each day. I remember reading about this and implementing it in my life a few years ago…but since then I have lost sight of this practical habit. What are MIT’s? Most Important Tasks of the day. By thinking about two or three MIT’s every morning and writing them down, I am telling myself that no matter what else I do today, these are the tasks I must accomplish. [Read more...]

Garlic is an Incredible Superfood

That wonderfully stinky garlic

Have you ever noticed how garlic can make almost anything taste better? The other night I wanted to cook some white fish, but when I opened the package I couldn’t believe how fishy it smelled! I crushed and chopped four cloves of garlic and sauteed them in a small amount of coconut oil, then put the fish in the pan. Within minutes the smell of fish was replaced by a wonderful aroma of garlic.

Garlic does a lot more than just improve flavor, though. First mentioned as a medicine about 6,000 years ago, garlic has been an important part of healing throughout the world. Even Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, used garlic to heal infections and reduce pain. It is now known as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antibacterial. Allicin, a compound in garlic that is also found in onions, accounts for it’s pungent smell and powerful cancer-protective punch. [Read more...]

Ouch…Why the Recent Soreness after Adding more Stretching?

I’m very sore lately…everywhere. Why is this surprising? Because I’ve increased my stretching in a huge way over the last few months. But in that time I have also suffered from back pain that, although its finally waning, is still persistent, and new hip soreness. I’m not necessarily suggesting that the soreness and back pain are a result of more stretching…but I am wondering why I am not feeling much better and loose since beginning to stretch more! I have been looking into this and have found some interesting information that I want to share with you. [Read more...]

About 100 Days Until June 1st…Six Ways to Get Ready!

Summer is closer than you think!

There are just over 100 days until June 1st! While we may feel like it’s still the dead of winter, spring is actually just around the corner (after all today’s the 20th of February and March 20th marks the first official day of spring), and summer follows shortly after that… Time to get motivated!

Pretty soon we will see magazines in the grocery store checkout aisles claiming swimsuit weather is coming…and while that may be true, there is more to it than that. Winter months can sometimes bring the blues and we can lack motivation. For many of us, winter is a time of comfort food and big clothes. Today I am wearing a long skirt and a sweater, for instance. It’s easy to hide ourselves in winter clothes, and oftentimes (although I hate to admit the magazines are right), spring and summer seem to sneak up and surprise us.

So with 100 days before the start of the summer months, it is a good time to check ourselves so as not to be taken by surprise when the warmer months suddenly show up! The following are six tips to make sure we are getting ready for the approaching summer months: [Read more...]

Five Blogs I Have Recently Enjoyed

It's Friday!

It’s Friday and I am posting links to five websites I have recently read and enjoyed. Do you have any others you want to share?

1. Run Blogger. This site is about all things running and since the author has a degree in anatomy, it also has some great information about the benefits of running and a fitness lifestyle. He also writes a lot about gear, especially running shoes and most recently wrote a post about the minimalist shoe movement in running. Interesting stuff…check it out! [Read more...]

Sometimes Life Trumps Fitness

It can be slow getting back to fitness after a break

When I think about my life of fitness, I don’t necessarily think about what I do each day, but the accumulated whole. If I thought about the daily doses of exercise, I think I would drive myself crazy trying to fit something in each day. It’s the big picture that is important. Sometimes life gets in the way of the daily stuff and we just can’t get it done. The last few days have been like that for me. [Read more...]

In Memoriam of One Who Lived to Serve (and a Quote of the Week)

Quote of the Week:
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time.
HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW, “A Psalm of Life”

I am struggling with confusing emotions today, and so at 9 Kid Fitness I want to write about someone who inspired me by his life. I am sad because I mourn the death of my father-in-law, Charles Hetzel, who passed away this afternoon. Yet a life such as his can really only be celebrated.  When people die  it is easy to put them up on a pedestal, and I think that is a fine thing to do.  But today there is no need for a pedestal.  Charlie lived his life truly and unbelievably for other people.  I don’t think he knew any other way.  When so many of us are selfish and focused on our own lives, men like my father-in-law seem to be from another time and place when people lived to be of service.  That is how I remember him.   [Read more...]

Calorie Counting Isn’t the Way to Go

All calories are not created equal

Every once in a while I hear someone ask, “How many calories does that have?”.  The answer should be the same, no matter what the food is that they are asking about…”It doesn’t matter, really.” Calories are not created equal and so will not have identical effects on our weight OR our health.  According to physical therapist Alan Tyson, we should try to remember this fact when making food choices.  Last year’s Report of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committeee on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans showed the following Top 10 sources of calories in the American diet:

1. Grain baked desserts (i.e. cakes, cookies, donuts, pastries etc.)….139 calories a day.

2. Yeast breads …..129 calories a day.

3. Chicken/chicken mixed dishes….121 calories a day.

4. Soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, etc. ……114 calories a day. [Read more...]
