From 5K to Marathon in a Year!

At 65, he started running and accomplished a marathon in a year…and so much more!

I saw this post on SparkPeople and thought I would repost it here for my 9 Kid Fitness readers…Great story!

From 5K to Marathon in One Year

On December 3, 2011 I ran my first race, a 5K in Orlando, FL.  I had just turned 65.  This was after 10 weeks of training, which started quite innocently as a way to lose a few pounds.  I enjoyed it so much I thought I would try to do a 5K.  Fast forward just about one year, and I have completed my 1st Marathon. The Savannah Rock N Roll Marathon, on November 3, 2012. [Read more…]

10 Great Foods to Eat After a Workout…

I have changed my tune over the years when it comes to what I eat after a run or hard workout.  It used to be that I really didn’t think about the makeup of an after workout snack or meal…I just ate what I felt like and didn’t worry too much about it.  Then I went through an “extreme” phase where I ate only low-fat foods that were also high in energy.  Now in my mid-forties,my thinking about post workout foods has evolved and I have  a more healthy outlook.

Alan Tyson, a physical therapist who works with professional, elite, and middle of the road athletes, knows a thing or two about nutrition after a workout.  The following article, written  by Alan, includes 10 foods to eat after an intense exercise session.  For the kind of fitness that I do, his guidelines are appropriate, even though I am not an elite athlete.  Many of my workouts are an hour or so, and while others are much shorter, I often do the intense variety.  I would tweek a few things, however.  For instance, I would add to the low-fat granola a gluten-free variety (such as Trader Joe’s Loaded Fruit and Nut).  I would also add a low-fat Greek yogurt to go along with the granola.  I love oatmeal and load it with nuts and dried fruit, so I would replace his energy bites with oatmeal.  Alan’s #1 post workout food is low-fat chocolate milk…but since I am not a milk drinker, I would say the Greek yogurt is the best replacement for that.  Finally, I would have to put my #1 post-workout food as a smoothie (Alan’s #5) because I can add so much to the drink (flax seed, chia seed, protein powder, kale and other greens,etc.).  Read the article and let me know what you would add as your favorite post workout meal… [Read more…]

It is Really No Surprise…Most Young Kids Love to Run!

As a cross country coach who practices with my team everyday during the school week,  I have no choice except to bring my young children along on our runs. Consequently what people see on the trails where we do most of our running is about 10-15 middle and high school runners, me pushing a double baby jogger with #9 (Sam) inside, #8 (6 year-old C.C.) in and out of the jogger, and #7 (8 year-old John) running alongside.  Needless to say, we turn a few heads.  As is often the case with our busy life, by the time I get to practice, pull the jogger out of the van and take a real inventory of what has come along, I realize a few key things are missing…things like shoes, for instance.  When I first started coaching, this would have been cause for more kids to be in my jogger than running alongside it. However, now what usually happens is that my young kids run without shoes…and most of the time still keep up with the rest of us. [Read more…]

Run Like a New Yorker…

If you ever question whether we have become a society of couch-potato, sedentary, lazy people…go for a run (actually, so as not to be intimidated, you might want to start with walk) in Central Park in New York City.  First of all, there are literally thousands of people (I was there on a Monday) in the park…running, walking, biking, and roller blading for exercise.  The one thing they almost all have in common?   SPEED! Hills…We Hate Them, But We Love Them…Here’s Why we Need Them!

Running hills on our recent trip to Maine was unavoidable….but now I see their value. I’m even wishing I had a fall marathon to run!

Having just returned from nine days in Maine, I was elated this morning as I began a run with my sister, Susan… 9.5 miles of gloriously flat terrain. During the trip I had actually come to dread the start of each run because it was always a whopper of a hill.  Actually, with the exception of a four mile run that was an out and back course, there was no way to avoid the hills in Maine.  Truth be told, and dreading aside, I found myself a stronger runner at the end of the trip.  In fact, I am disappointed that I am not in training for a fall marathon this year because I believe the last few weeks in hilly Maine would have been an outstanding base for a marathon PR. Day Five at Lovejoy Pond…A Picture Perfect Day

Hi, I am # 6 (Gracie) and I am writing today’s post about our adventures in good, clean fun at Lovejoy Pond in Maine.  Instead of telling you about our day, I will show it to you with photos since I think it was a picture perfect day!

While Peter and his dad went for a run, my mom and Annie (and Sammy kind of) did P90X Yoga to start the day…

Day One at Lovejoy Pond…Keeping the Main Thing The Maine Thing

On the dock

Day One August 14, 2012 Thought of the Day…”Keep the Main thing the Maine thing.” This morning I woke up to the sound of Loons (a woeful, high-pitched, almost song-like cry) at about 6:40 a.m.  Some of the kids got up about 20 minutes later and quietly raced down to the lake where we are staying (there is a quiet hour rule in effect here from 9:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.)  We are staying in a cabin that long ago was a part of Camp Menatoma and is now owned by my brother-in-law’s family. It’s a lovely peaceful area right on the water with two docks…one for swimming and one for fishing. About 15 other cabins dot the area where we are located and everyone shares the docks, a few lodges, and a laundry outhouse. [Read more…]

Do Not Ignore the Pelvic Floor (and Here’s a Website to Help)…

The pelvic floor is crucial to our core.

I recently came across a great resource I would like to share with my 9 Kid Fitness readers (at least the women in the group)! As you might know from reading my blog I am always seeking ways to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and I believe those muscles are a crucial part of our core.  As I get older and continue to exercise, pelvic health has become even more important to my overall health and especially to my ability to stay functionally fit!  What do I mean by  functionally fit?  My fitness is so much more than simply my daily workouts … I need to be “fit for life” and that means for all of the different roles I have and for the many daily demands that I face (#9 is three and as the baby of the family…still loves to be held)!  Although the “demands” may change, they  will only continue to be varied as I get older. In other words I need to be fit for all of my life, not just for the hour or so a day that I workout. [Read more…]

9 Things You Should Not do if You Want to Lose Weight This Summer

1. Don’t decide to go on an extreme diet because it is summer. Extreme diets don’t work. Cutting out ALL carbs, avoiding fruits, or giving up suddenly ALL meats isn’t going to help you lose weight for the long haul. Instead, try cutting back in small ways…avoiding desserts, trying not to snack between meals, and drinking water before you eat a snack just in case you are actually thirsty -not really hungry at all.

Where Do you Fall on the Running Fashion Spectrum?

Athleta is one of the popular brands for fashionable, comfortable running clothes.

The other day I pulled up to meet my friend Susan for an early morning run at the trail not far from where we live. Typical of me, I had grabbed the clothes I was wearing quickly…in the dark so as not to wake my sleeping husband. The result of my hasty dressing was a new lululemon running tank and an old pair of gym shorts. I know…when was the last time you heard the term gym shorts? You may have to reach pretty far back into your memory…think 1980’s high school P.E. class for that one. Anyway, by the time I swung into a parking spot, slipped on my running shoes and was tying up the laces, Susan was walking up to my car to say good morning. She greeted me out my drivers side window. “Nice shirt,” she said. I thanked her as I got out of my car and turned to lock the door. That’s when I heard her say, “Oh, sister…really?” I knew immediately she had seen the shorts. Although it was still dark out, her keen fashion eyes had caught the faux pas. “Have I taught you nothing?” She asked. [Read more…]
