Why You Need to Know about ORAC for Optimal Health

I don’t know about you…but there are some nutritional terms that seem somewhat vague to me. They sound important, and I know they are, but I’m not necessarily sure exactly why. One of those terms is “antioxidants”. So when I read an article recently explaining why antioxidants are vital to our athletic performance, I was excited to finally understand more about them. I decided to copy the article for my 9 Kid Fitness readers as I think you will also be interested in the subject! … [Read more…]

My Full Spring Calendar Forces me to Make Workouts More Efficient

I don’t know about you, but spring is crazy around here.  By crazy I mean busy, busy, busy.  This spring we have two graduations and a First Holy Communion within one month and that’s not to mention all the other things that come along during this time of year…senior prom, exams, and finishing up homeschooling for the little guys.  Needless to say, exercise will have to be short and sweet during April, May, and June.  Did I say sweet?  The right word is more like powerful/mean/efficient – you pick!  My nutty upcoming schedule has got me thinking again…what is the most efficient workout schedule for our busiest times? MIT’s Help to Keep me From Spinning my Wheels

I have not had a lot of energy lately and I have gotten stuck spinning my wheels. A bug (flu-like) hit our house and some recent health news about a family member have kept me from a goal oriented attitude daily. But spinning my wheels is not getting me anywhere! I need to rethink my daily tasks to get me back on track. One way to do this is to think about my MIT’s each day. I remember reading about this and implementing it in my life a few years ago…but since then I have lost sight of this practical habit. What are MIT’s? Most Important Tasks of the day. By thinking about two or three MIT’s every morning and writing them down, I am telling myself that no matter what else I do today, these are the tasks I must accomplish. [Read more…]

Five Blogs I Have Recently Enjoyed

It's Friday!

It’s Friday and I am posting links to five websites I have recently read and enjoyed. Do you have any others you want to share?

1. Run Blogger. This site is about all things running and since the author has a degree in anatomy, it also has some great information about the benefits of running and a fitness lifestyle. He also writes a lot about gear, especially running shoes and most recently wrote a post about the minimalist shoe movement in running. Interesting stuff…check it out! [Read more…]

A Healthy Super Bowl Snack!

I just made these deliciously healthy quesadillas for dinner, but I will also serve them on Super Bowl Sunday.  I used coconut oil, but a little real butter would work well too.  I also share some links to other healthy Super Bowl snacks below.  What are you making for the big game…is it healthy? It’s the New Year, Stupid (and a Quote of the Week)

Quote of the Week:

Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp,
or what’s a heaven for?

Robert Browning

With January 1st just around the corner, New Year’s resolutions are on my mind. I love resolutions.  Maybe it’s because I love the chance to start again, and I always think this time I’m gonna stick with it.  I realize not everyone feels the same way.  The other day while I was in a long line at Starbucks, I overheard a conversation between three people who all agreed that New Year’s resolutions are overrated, unrealistic, and just stupid, really. None of them were setting any resolutions for the new year, because they knew they would never keep them.  I thought about this as I left Starbucks and I decided I totally disagree. The point isn’t whether or not we keep our resolutions, but that we make them at all. [Read more…]

Nine Great Christmas Gifts for the Fitness-Minded

1. Personalized Water bottle. Whether we run, swim, do yoga or lift weights, we all drink water before, during, or after we workout…so a water bottle is something most fitness lovers always need! And buying bottled water is not a cheap way to go. Stainless steel bottles work well because they can be put into a dishwasher to clean and they are very durable. Try the Sophiefont water bottle from the Catholic Company (of course I am going to put a plug in for our company…but these are really good looking and totally unique)!

2. Garmin Watch. These are not cheap, but are great for the runners on your list, especially if they might be training for a race soon. I don’t have a Garmin, but most of my running buddies do and they love them (maybe a little too much) for keeping track of splits, mileage, and average pace per mile. Although I have always fancied myself as a purest who doesn’t even wear a watch much of the time, I have to admit to asking my friends for all the data their Garmins have collected on a run. Movie Review: “The Way”….and a Quote of the Week

Quote of the week: “You don’t choose a life, Dad…you live one.” From the movie, “The Way” (Emilio Estevez and Martin Sheen)

If you are thinking about seeing a movie this holiday, I highly recommend “The Way” with Martin Sheen. It is actually a collaboration between Martin Sheen and his son Emilio Estevez, to honor the pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago. The Way of St. James is the pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the apostle Saint James are buried. Depending on where a person starts on the Camino, it can take a few months to travel “the Way”. [Read more…]

Can Coffee Aggravate Incontinence?

According to My Optimum Health.com, more than 13 million people in the United States — male and female, young and old — experience incontinence. Women experience incontinence twice as often as men. Pregnancy and childbirth, menopause, and the structure of the female urinary tract account for this difference. While sometimes surgery or other procedures might be required to treat this issue, oftentimes a first step (besides pelvic floor exercises) is our nutrition.  To quickly review the most common types of incontinence, the following is a brief recap: [Read more…]
