It is late in the evening of May 28, 2012 – Memorial Day 2012. Sometimes we forget too easily what this day is for. Time off work, no school, picnics, holiday sales…our minds are often on these things when we think of Memorial Day Monday. My family is in Annapolis, Maryland, for the graduation and commissioning of the United States Naval Academy Class of 2012. Our son, Charlie, will receive that commissioning tomorrow, and so tonight my thoughts are more oriented towards the true meaning of the memorial holiday. [Read more…]
After a Diagnosis of Cancer, We are Left Feeling… Hopeful

On February 29th my husband, James, was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer of his throat. I suppose there was some point in my life when I wondered what it would be like to hear the words from a doctor that someone I loved had cancer. Did you know that what you eat directly after exercising – typically within two hours can have a significant impact on the health benefits you reap from exercise? Consuming sugar, fruit juices or refined carbohydrates within this post-exercise window will negatively affect both your insulin sensitivity and your human growth hormone (HGH). A recent study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that eating a low-carbohydrate meal after aerobic exercise enhances your insulin sensitivity. This is highly beneficial since impaired insulin sensitivity or insulin resistance, is the underlying cause of type 2 diabetes and a significant risk factor for other chronic diseases, such as heart disease. No One is Going to Remind You, So Remind Yourself…Do Those Kegels!
It ocurred to me recently that I have been lackadaisical about pelvic floor exercises. I had been doing them regularly for some time, but I have gotten lazy. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had someone reminding us to do them? We can pretty much count on most group exercise classes ending with some sort of stretching routine.
