Functional Fitness Works When Other Types of Exercise Are Elusive

Functional Fitness is fitness that we do outside of a scheduled workout time…it’s the stuff that we sometimes forget to count, but that counts for a lot!  Mowing the lawn with a push mower, landscaping (moving rocks, logs, gardening), using stairs at home for a quick and dirty workout, walking or running around a soccer field while the kids are at practice.   All of these fit under the functional fitness category (almost anything goes) and can go a long way to improve conditioning when you least expect it! Me and the Energizer Bunny

BUNNYThe Energizer Bunny is alive and well…! Actually, I’m not sure where the credit is really due, to the battery… or to our Lifecycle stationary bike.  We’ve owned this Lifecycle since 1992, when my husband bought it for me before #2 (Mary Kate), was born.  It has moved with us from Bloomington, IN to St. Louis, MO, to Indianapolis, IN and finally to Charlotte, NC.  Along the way, the bike has been a loyal friend to me. Especially during my pregnancies and postpartum months (years, to be more accurate).

As I got increasingly larger during pregnancies, and it was harder to run, I would ride the bike.  When it was raining or snowing and I couldn’t get out, I would ride the bike.  When I was sidelined by injury, I could usually still ride my bike.  And sometimes, when I just wanted to read and not think about exercise, I rode the bike.  We don’t have an exercise room, so the Lifecycle has always graced our bedroom or closet (large closet). Our Day is Full Of Exercise Opportunities…Nine Easy Ways to Fit Fitness into a Busy Day

time6a00d8341c03bb53ef01348404979b970cI used to believe that if I didn’t have time for at least an hour of fitness, or if I didn’t work up a serious sweat…it wasn’t a real workout.  That was my 30 year-old self.  My 46 year-old self has a totally different idea of fitness.  Basically it can be summed up in the words, “Whatever works”.

There are plenty of days that I wake up and from my too-tired-to-get-up early-and-run vantage point, the day could appear hopeless in terms of fitting in a workout.  But I have learned to see things in another way…I now look at it in terms of the opportunities for fast fitness.  It’s a challenge, and I think it’s fun to see just how much of a workout I can get by the end of these kinds of days.  Don’t believe me?  Let me show you nine ways to fit fitness into an otherwise busy day… [Read more…]

She Lost Almost 20 Pounds…And Kept it Off

Diana Sibley 1I wrote recently about long term weight loss, and Diana Sibley is an example of someone who has accomplished just that.  She lost almost 20 pounds over one year ago and has kept the weight off.  One of the amazing things  was that she was actually only trying to lose five!   I talked to Diana about her weight loss, how she did it, and why she is confident she will keep the weight off.  Her experience is probably not unlike many others’ experience…it came down to a decision, a commitment, and common sense.

Loads of Diapers Everyday

I gave my kids this math problem this morning: figure out approximately how many diapers we have changed since our first child was born in 1989. The number they came up with was 32,850. That’s a heck of a lot of diapers! We are in the process (and I do mean “process”) of potty training #9 (Sam) and so diapers are on my mind. 32,850 is actually a low estimate considering we used 730 as our multiplier (two years) and only a few of our children were actually trained at two years, most were two and a half when they became potty trained. The Mighty Macs…A Worthwhile Film

My son John (#7) turned eight yesterday, and we celebrated with dinner at CiCi’s Pizza (early carbo-loading for my marathon:)) and a movie (refrained from popcorn, however), “The Mighty Macs”. When we got to the movie the kids were all excited because we were the only ones there, although I saw the empty theater as both good and bad. It was good because we made the mistake of bringing our 2 and a 1/2 year old, who sat through the previews and then thought it was over and wanted to run around. We did our best to keep him occupied, but I was glad no one else was in the theater when he started playing cars on the seats and honking loudly. The bad part was that no one else was there to see this great film. Although it may seem like I drift a little off the subject of exercise, I believe this film exemplifies the values of what many parents and coaches want their kids to aim for, and frankly, what I would like to promote with 9 Kid Fitness, as well. Move…Now!

drill sergeant
MOVE is a word my sister-in-law is thinking about lately. I talked to her a few weeks ago on the phone and she told me that word is on her mind because she has decided to make it her axiom. It is her rallying cry to get her to …well…to Move.
Maybe we all need a little motto to do the things that we really don’t want to do. For her, it is making time for fitness. Whether lifting some free weights or going for a walk, she has decided that she needs to stop the excuses and get moving. So throughout the day she thinks …Move!

It made me wonder, what word could motivate me to do things I really don’t want to do? Could one word challenge me in the same way that the word move challenges my sister-in-law? I thought about it. I am a procrastinator. Whether it is the laundry piling up, the call to the insurance company I need to make, or getting the dogs to the vet, if I can put it off till later, I will! I use the excuse that I am too busy… I can’t possibly get to that now. The truth is that I will be “too busy” for a long time! So I have decided that my one-word motto is NOW. Get the laundry done Now. Call to make an appointment Now. Clean that closet Now. I am beginning to think there might be a little drill sergeant that tiny word!

What is your motto? Can you come up with one word that will challenge you to do something you know you should do, but don’t really want to? Share it with us!

A Thank-you to my Husband

I feel fortunate to have a supportive husband who very much encourages my “9 Kid Fitness” lifestyle. In fact, it was my husband James who first suggested I start sharing my experiences with other parents who are trying to live active, healthy lifestyles as well. And so today I just want to thank him. As I write this, I am flying with my two oldest sons, Charlie (#1), and Thomas (#3) to Miami and then on to Kingston, Jamaica where we will be on a week long mission trip. As we fly, James is somewhere on a highway in a Ford Club Wagon 15-passenger van traveling with five children (one of whom is a toddler) and two dogs down to Florida where we will meet him in a week. Recent Workouts

Technical difficulties prevented me from adding updates to my workouts.  Here are my latest (I actually did workout between Jan. and June…but I lost all my content!  Kind of ironic actually since I have been dealing with a foot injury…plantar facsitis…ugh!)

6/24/2015 Today I walked.  I walked for one hour while #8 had swim practice.  It was already 93% at 9:30 when I started.  But it felt great to sweat.  I was supposed to get up at 6 am to meet my sister, Susan.  But she texted early to say she couldn’t do it so I pushed snooze and decided NOT to run, but to walk instead since it was later when I finally could get out.  Had a great workout though.  NOTE TO SELF:  Don’t forget how awesome a walk can make you feel.

6/23/2015 Awesome 7 am barre class.  Used 6 and 3 lb. weights and did squats, lunges, tons of arm work, and a whole lot more before we even got to the barre…

6/22/2015 Ran with my sister, Susan and her dog Maggie for 55 minutes in her neighborhood.

20 Minutes to a Great Full-Body Workout

Its really amazing how tough a 20 minute workout done at home or at the gym can be. And more importantly, how effective it can be! So many of us have a mindset of a long workout being the only kind that truly brings results. But the fact is that even 20 minutes of strength training can bring about change not only in how we look, but how we feel as well.  Weight training needs to be an essential part of everybody’s fitness regime in order to boost our metabolism and improve aging (many people say fight aging, but I think that’s a misnomer). However, many of us feel we just don’t have time. The following is one example of a 20 minute whole body strength routine that can be done at home. [Read more…]
